Starting life as a 1937 International shell, the full-scale Trophy Rat has gone over 1,500 man hours (and counting) from conceptualization to completion. The goal for this build was to accomplish the perfect blend between a trophy truck and a rat rod with an LS6 Corvette engine for a heart. Something that could be used as a daily driver, but also take to the King of Hammers or local road course.
Team Associated's Ready-To-Run 1:10 replica of Northrup Fabrication's Trophy Rat is wrapped around the chassis and engineering of the 9-time R.O.A.R. Short Course National Championship-winning truck. The Trophy Rat is both all show and all go!
The truck features a water-resistant high-power Reedy brushless speed control and 3300kV brushless motor, a 2.4GHz 2-channel radio system as well as our ALL NEW DVC (Dynamic Vehicle Control) receiver unit with built-in adjustable digital gyro which allows vehicle stability to be adjusted to flow with the terrain. A Reedy metal-gear digital high-torque servo and LED lights front and rear round out the Trophy Rat!
The suspension also received an upgrade with the addition of adjustable blue anodized aluminum V2 12mm big bore coil-over shocks. The gearbox now comes with a heavy-duty sealed-gear differential and externally adjustable V2 slipper clutch. 81mm CVA driveshafts increase traction and chassis support. Hex-drive wheels come standard on the Trophy Rat with realistic off road wheels and tires to keep the truck gripping the ground.
I have real mixed feelings on this one. I was very disappointed that right out of the box, one set of lights did not work. I figured this would be an easy fix and I'd just ask ModelSport to send through a new set of LED's, but after experimenting with swapping arround the front and rear light connections it quickly became apparent that both sets of LED's were working, and one of the power leads integrated into the ESC was dead. So it has lose one point for this alone. Next, I've only used this three times. First two outings on tarmac were great and I always check that everything it tight on new cars but then on my third outing with some gentle off road, a pinion gear grub screw that had been clearly incorrectly set and threadlocked at the factory then instantly stripped when trying to wind it out. I finally managed to get it out with a lot of heat and a Torx bit, and then replaced it, but for these 2 quality control issues to effect a brand new car, I have to knock off 1 star. I've knocked off another star because I have to question the value. Above issues aside, it is a lovely looking car that drives well, but it's still a pretty simply 3S, rear wheel drive, with basic bodyshell i.e. it's not like there is a cage or anything. I also own an HPI Jumpshot SC flux. Granted , this does not have the steering gyro, but its around £100 cheaper for a pretty similar 3S rear wheel drive package, is just as fast, and just as much fun to drive. So unless you are hell bent on the Rat Rod looks, my advice would be to save a considerable chunk of money if you just want a simple and fast 2WD and get the HPI instead.
